Why is resentment so deep against PAP?

'It is a surprise for us that the resentment is so deep'
Minister Lim Hwee Hua says PAP needs to seriously look at transforming itself

SINGAPORE - She said that she had been caught by surprise.

Surprise at how deep the resentment and unhappiness against the People's Action Party (PAP) ran among residents in Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

Speaking to the media yesterday for the first time since the General Election, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua said that she always knew "it was a close fight" they had on their hands against the Workers' Party team lead by its secretary-general Low Thia Khiang and Singapore's first female full minister said she was "disappointed at the outcome".

"We had spent the last five years working hard, trying to understand - in the areas where there are gaps - what the problems were, what the deficiencies were, and to address those," she recalled. "We have also, of course, been trying to engage the residents on some of the current issues."

"It is a surprise for us that the resentment is so deep and the unhappiness is so deep." In fact, it was only during the campaign, that "we began to fully appreciate the extent of the unhappiness and resentment towards the Government, hence the pledge by the PAP team led by Mr George Yeo for us to have a strong role in the transformation of the PAP itself."

She described her team's pledge for transformation within the PAP as something that the ruling party "really needs to sit up to and to seriously look at".

Is the foreign talent policy and immigration policy worth keeping in light of the deep resentment by the Singapore population against PAP? Why is PAP so stubborn to seek support ffrom new citizens and lose the support of local born Singaporeans? Do you think PAP is aware that even new immigrations are voting against PAP due to great influx of foreigners and newer immigrations? Do you feel that immigration should be reduced and Permanent Residents be reduced further before situation get worse for PAP? Do you think this time PAP will truly listen and reduce the intake of foreign talents and immigration into Singapore or PAP will remain as arrogant as before and continue ahead without feelings for the population?
