Who will help or listen to us, poor voters?
Who will help or listen to us, poor voters?

MM: Make the right choice to secure the future of your children, grandchildren

SINGAPORE - Ahead of the May 7 General Election, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew today issued a statement telling Singaporeans: "In the heat and dust of this election, remember, do not risk your assets, property values, job opportunities. Vote for men and women of proven character and track records of high performance. Make the right choice, to secure the future of your children and grandchildren."

The statement, in full, reads:

"In the heat, dust and clamour of our election campaigns, there will be many statements and counter-statements. My one simple message is: Look at the fundamentals.

Dearest Eminent Sir, we voters are very thankful for your timely reminder. We voters are also grateful for your past efforts. At the same time, we are sure your PAP is also grateful to us voters for trusting PAP and voting PAP as cohesive united Singaporeans who have been proven capable of knowing who to vote for this last few decades.

Unfortunately, since the implementation of the idea of 2 casinos and great influx of foreigners into Singapore whether under "S" employment pass or whatever, we voters feel that or rather it does honestly appear to us that PAP doesn't appear to be extraordinary with great ideas just like before or that the very extraordinary salaries can justify such ordinary ideas of creating casinos and keep pumping more foreigners to boost economy and GDP.

No doubt PAP has achieved wonderful statistical GDP figures and glowing figures of creating jobs for "Singaporeans plus huge numbers of permanent residents", but that doesn't exactly appeal to us who are facing fear of the future, wondering who will help or listen to us, poor voters. Other than above above casinos and great influx of foreigners, it is also all the little things that add up to shape our mass feelings today and brought many of us to feel that perhaps it is time to re-look at our fundamental belief that PAP has the capability to look after our future or that perhaps PAP can do with more help from more opposition to sharpen things up for the benefit of Singapore and Singaporeans. Which we voters are sure that you, being our modern founding father, would likely agree that it's all for the benefit of Singapore and Singaporeans after all.

Please be understanding, our poor little grouses online or increasing unhappiness online have been dismissed as "noise", which frankly do affect the mood of many Singaporeans who feel kind of insulted in a way that would be something like "when you ask for response, we responded and you turned around and say it's noise". What would you want us poor voters to do? We have no one else to turn to or any offline impartial media to turn to. Have a heart, be in our shoes, feel the heat everyday, walk the pound going for countless interviews for jobs and being interviewed by foreigners who in the end still employed their own kind.

We the poor voters of Singapore have to swallow at one stage about 70,000 Permanent Residents a year and increasing what appears to us as freely given citizenships on this already very overcrowded island. We the poor voters of Singapore are forced to downsize our hdb flats to accommodate increasing numbers of foreigners while watching prices going up and up.

Whilst you see it as jobs for Singaporeans, we on the ground see it as great competition from foreigners which by our own hands elected PAP government doesn't seem to control this great influx until much much later and after so many complaints and just before election. We see foreigners waiting to pounce on our jobs if we are sick or if we are pregnant. Whenever we complained to our elected PAP government, we get rebutted and get salesman talk that "foreign talents are good for us" or "without foreign talents to build our hdb flats, we got no flats" or "trust us, we know foreign talents are for your sake". We are very afraid of our future and our children's future and we are seriously doubting on our children's ability to afford housing with hdb flat payment calculated at current 30 years pay back which possibly be extended to 40 or 50 years pay back later perhaps?

Honestly, at our lowest point, we poor voters who are slammed left and right and with nobody to turn to, are very surprised that so many brave and talented sons and daughters of Singapore have willingly step up in the face of potential law suits to serve our country. It is as if it is heaven sent or God sent to help us, poor voters, who have really no one else to turn to.

Does anybody seriously think we Singaporeans, voters of Singapore staying in Singapore would rock our foundations given any choice? Are we that immature and dumb to throw away our own future? Why would we do that if we have a choice? Are we voting terrorists into parliament or are we voting fellow Singaporeans who have the heart for the people and who are extremely brave enough to step up in the face of possible potential law suits by PAP later after the election?

Dear Eminent Sir, let go and let the people have the choice, let PAP hear our cries through our votes, perhaps it is not a bad thing that PAP revert back to being opposition after all PAP did came from opposition background too. It's not the end of the world even if PAP revert back to opposition role, may be it can be for the better, who knows the future, who can say back then some 46 years ago, we voters were wrong to give PAP a chance too?

What are your views? Do you feel that it would be better if we have some opposition to enhance the quality of debates and quality of work for the benefit of Singapore and Singaporeans? Do you agree we Singaporeans should salute our fellow Singaporeans who are very brave to step out to serve our country?
